Did You Expect Any Less?

This lawsuit was going to happen sooner or later. A U.S. based rapper is suing Canada Border Services for $900 million over racial profiling. Jerom Almon, Chief Executive Officer of “Murdercap Records”, is accusing customs officers of racism because he is black.
“They’re treating us as if we’re criminals…if the Klan had a police force, it would be the border services” Almon said. The 41 year old also claims he’s been searched 117 out of 120 times the past few years.
I find this lawsuit way too funny. Accusing Canada Border Services as the Klu Klux Klan is pretty hilarious, especially when the accuser represents a ridiculous label called “Murdercap Records”.
We all know gangster rap is represented by the following images:
If you represent a deviant lifestyle, along with a record label called “Murdercap Records”, expect an anal cavity search while attempting to cross the border.
Let’s suppose I worked for a record label called “Al Queda” or “Taliban Records”, should I expect any law enforcement agency to give me an easy time? Hell no…
In the end, I feel these cries of racism and million dollar lawsuits are a pathetic approach by individuals who associate themselves with such a controversial lifestyle. Mr. Almon should definately take off his “Stupid” cap and smell the flowers around him.

Some people will do anything to own the latest consoles. I can totally understand the psychology behind this craze. In fact, during the 80’s and early 90’s, I was hardcore video gamer myself. No price was ever too high to prevent yours truly from buying the latest hardware.
I remember those endless nights playing Street Fighter on my Super Nintendo, while irritating my opponents with super cheap moves. However, there comes a time when every (REAL) gamer has to grow up, retire from consoles and move on to bigger and better things….like PC Games.
We all know demand is outweighing supply for next generation consoles. During the past three months, you’ve probably seen people lining up throughout the night so they can purchase a Nintendo Wii or a Playstation 3. There were even reports of people being robbed at gun point, while waiting for a store to open.
But would you go so far to fill up your bladder for a Nintendo Wii? A young woman had recently taken part in a radio contest, where participants were required to drink a large amount of water. Jennifer Lea Strange, was not a hardcore video gamer, she was trying to win the game system for her kids. She was hoping to go the longest time without urinating, hence, winning the Nintendo Wii.
Unfortunately, Jennifer died from water intoxication hours after the contest. Water intoxication occurs when the body takes in more water than it can remove, causing your electrolyte balance to be thrown off, while leading to cardiac arrest.
How sad! A tragic end for a young mother who left children behind. I wouldn’t be surprised if her kids never play video games again.

The world’s most famous soccer player is coming to America! Starting this year, David Beckham will play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer (MLS).
Beckham is a pop culture icon. He’s famous for his looks, his wife Victoria, and his commercial appeal. And yes, he even has a movie named after him – “Bend It Like Beckham”.
Is it time to celebrate? Do you even care or watch soccer at all?
Like I said before, Soccer is seen as a second class sport in this part of the world. If you live in North America, chances are you probably don’t watch a single soccer game throughout the year (as evidenced by the 0.6 ratings MLS receives on the ABC and ESPN network). And I bet you don’t even know who won the MLS Championship last year either.
MLS is supposed to be the premier professional soccer league in North America. Founded in 1993, the league has faced constant challenges, including low TV ratings, decreasing attendance and ownership problems. According to Business Week, the league has lost $350 million dollars since its inception.
By signing Beckham to a five year package worth $250 million dollars, MLS has garnered media attention that it would otherwise not receive. It’s also been reported that Beckham’s endorsers will be paying a majority of his retainer fee rather than the league. But will this hefty investment pay off in the long run? A lot depends on TV ratings. It’s pretty obvious that MLS has failed to capitlize on building momentum in the USA. Major sponsors have been reluctant to invest in any league with low tv ratings and little fanfare. Plus, soccer has nowhere near the amount of television breaks that other professional sports provide (NFL, MLB, NBA, etc).
Soccer is known as the “World’s Game”. And there will always be a dedicated following in North America. But if Beckham fails to capture the mainstream audience (you know, the people who pay the bills), his contract may end up as a costly mistake.
During the 1970’s, the North American Soccer League (NASL) tried a similar move by signing over the hill stars to expensive contracts. After a few successful seasons, the NASL folded in 1984.
Is history repeating itself? In due time, we’ll know the answer.
For now, I look forward to watching more NFL playoff games this coming weekend!

Happy New Year everyone! Imaginary Diva and I celebrated the New Year by attending a Salsa venue last night. We had a good time as the place was filled with many people. It was a pleasure to see friends we haven’t seen in a while. The salsa scene in Vancouver is a pretty cool niche so it was inevitable to see some familiar faces.
Did I make any New Year’s resolutions for myself? Nope, not a single one. I personally think the whole concept of New Year’s resolutions is stupid. Think about it. If you really want to change something about yourself, do it right away. Why wait for some round number on a calendar to finally take action?
2007 will be very exciting year for me. I have some pretty big projects and opportunities that will take a majority of my time. With smart work and determination, 2007 will be a super year for me.
