I always knew tight fitting Spandex was evil! A report from the Harvard Medical School suggests riding a bike for long periods can result in erectile difficulties.  “What to Do about Erectile Dysfunction” reveals the highest risk group to be men who cycle more than three hours a week.

Sitting on a bike for long time puts pressure on the perineum, the area between the genitals and the anus. This pressure can harm nerves and temporarily impede blood flow, causing tingling or numbness in the penis, then eventually resulting in erectile dysfunction. The study also indicates a conventional bicycle causes a drop in oxygen to the penis, while a recumbent bicycle did not.

If you’re an avid biker and refuse to switch to recumbent bikes here are some suggestions to help save your love life:

• Wear padded biking shorts
• Raise the handlebars so that you’re sitting relatively upright. This shifts pressure from the perineum to the buttocks
• Use a wide, well-padded or gel-filled seat instead a narrow seat, which places more pressure on the perineum
• Position the seat to reduce pressure. Make sure it is not so high that your legs are fully extended at the bottom of your pedal stroke, and don’t tilt the seat up
• Change your position and take breaks during long rides
• If you feel tingling or numbness in the penis, stop riding for a week or two

“Being out on the water, relaxing away from stresses on land instantly sets the right mood for making a love connection,” said sociologist and relationship expert Pepper Schwartz, PhD. “Not only is the setting a mood- enhancer, but boaters are more active and exude confidence in their physical appearance, which is naturally going to be attractive to other active people.”

The survey polled 1000+ boaters and non-boaters about their quality of life, intimacy, etc.  When it comes to having a quality sex life, two-thirds of boaters strongly agreed to having a satisfying time behind close doors (or shall I say under the deck?), as compared to 58% by non-boaters. 

Setting sail on the water allows people a chance to bond, relax and socialize.   Given the right weather and sea conditions, the boating lifestyle can set the right mood for a romantic evening.   And according to the research, staying in shape and keeping healthy can also lead to a better love life.  58 Percent of boaters were happy with their fitness as compared to 50% of non-boaters.
