Did You Expect Any Less?

Archive for April, 2008

I remember playing with those little green army men during my childhood years.  My imagination would conjure up pretty cool battlefield scenarios, where my green marines would constantly defeat unsuspecting enemies with superior firepower and strategy.  Of course, not a single Marine from my squadron would ever die because each one had a personal shield device for added protection. ;-)

Now I can take my love of little army men to the next level with the Dueling Space Marine Copter Set from ThinkGeek.  You and a friend can have an exciting duel in the air, while unleashing invisible laser beams at each opposing Marine.  Upon a successful hit the enemy will lose power and fall crashing to the ground.  In addition, simulated sound effects and flashes adds a realistic element to the gunfire.

Ahh…a perfect toy for men who never want to grow up.  Time to whip out my credit card!

Available at ThinkGeek.com for $49.99.

A copy of Call of Duty 4 (PC) somehow ended up on my desk yesterday.  Being a true gaming junkie, I took the opportunity to dust off my gaming mouse and play for an hour or two(?).

Evidently, 1 hour became 2, then 2 hours became 3, and so on.

PC games can be such an addictive habit.  Maybe it’s time for me to pick up a new hobby.  Sudoku perhaps?  Bleh…

Joe Calzaghe - The Legend Killer

The “Pride of Wales” Joe Calzaghe has finally silenced his critics.  After a gut wrenching performance against the legendary Bernard Hopkins, Calzaghe proved to the world last Saturday why he’s the best light heavyweight boxer in the world.  Despite being knocked down 70 seconds into the first round, Calzaghe eventually fought his way back by earning a split decision over Hopkins.

Calzaghe simply outboxed Hopkins by swinging a lot more punches throughout the fight.  Hopkins was unable to land no more than one or two punches while fighting inside the clinch.  In the end, Calzaghe landed 33% of his shots, while Hopkins landed 27%.

What does the future hold for Calzaghe?  A fight with Roy Jones Jr. is rumored to happen later this year.  As previously posted, this would be a big mistake for Jones, since he’s way past his prime and Calzaghe is quickly gaining a reputation as a Legend Killer.  In the world of boxing money talks, unfortunately, for Roy Jones Jr., this may be his last big pay day for the foreseeable future.

Tips to Stretch Your Gas Mileage

We all know gas prices are continually rising due to many factors, such as supply and demand, middle east politics, etc.  Many of us have no choice but to fill up our tanks, while absorbing these higher prices because we rely on our cars as a means of transportation.

Hummer’s Suck

What Can I say?  Hummer’s really suck ass.

I was recently forwarded an email from a friend containing tips on how we can stretch our gas consumption, especially without buying a new car or electric hyrid.  Perhaps you save a couple of dollars by following these simple tips:

Check out the following email.

“…I don’t know what you guys are paying for gasoline… but here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money’s worth for every gallon. . .

Here at the ******** Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.! ! ! One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Here are the instructions:

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold.  Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening…  your gallon is not exactly a gallon.  In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business.  But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you’re filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high.  In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping.  All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor.  Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you’ re getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL/HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine.  Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating  roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up–most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt and WATER that normally settles on the bottom.
NEVER …..this is a fact.

Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.
